Sport at St Dominic’s is based on the principles of ‘Sport for All’. We believe it is essential that all pupils experience a range of physical activities through out their school life with the assumption that they will choose a ‘sport for life’.

Although our principle is ‘Sport for All’ we still enjoy participating in competitions in team and individual activities and strive for our pupils to reach their full potential through practice and performance.

Please click below for more information on our Extra Curricular activities and Fixture List for the current Autumn 2008 term.....

NETBALL

Netball is probably the most popular team sport at St Dominic’s during the Autumn and Spring terms.

Practices.

There are many opportunities for pupils to participate, in practices such as before school at 8am (Year 7&8), lunch breaks (twice a week for Year 7&8 and twice a week for Years 9, 10 & 11) and extended days twice a week. When the evenings become too dark for play, Tuesday extended days normally become Netball fitness and drills, which is popular for many of the girls wanting to improve their skills.

Fixtures.

As a Staffordshire school based between Stafford and Wolverhampton, we take advantage of our position, joining the Staffordshire schools in their festivals in the Autumn terms (2 per year group) and the Staffordshire Tournaments (U12, U13, U14 & U15) in the Spring term.

We also make many fixtures against local schools in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas. School fixtures take place on weekdays and Saturday mornings.

HOCKEY

Under development

Fixtures.

As from Autumn half term until Spring half term (Academic Year 2008-2009), regular hockey competitions will take place against a number of other schools for each year group at Cannock Hockey club.

TRAMPOLINING AND GYMNASTICS

Practices.

Our trampolining and gymnastics coach runs an extended day club every Tuesday in the Sports hall for pupils in Years 7-10. This is extremely popular, but remember this is not the same as garden trampolining, skills are taught with poise and control, and a ‘flip’ is called a somersault.

Academic Year 2008-2009 plans: Gymnastics and trampolining teams will take part in Staffordshire and ISA competitions from this term.

BADMINTON

Club.

Badminton is a very popular recreational club at St Dominic’s. On Mondays during extended day Year 7-12 are invited to try out their racquet skills, for fun and exercise.

TENNIS

Practices.

During the summer term, tennis practices take place on extended days on Tuesday for Year 9-12 and Thursday for Year 7&8. Pupils can also, with permission, use the Tennis courts during lunchtime.

Future plans for developing Tennis further: Group and individual coaching will be made available from 5pm organised through the school through external coaches using the school facilities.

Competition.

There are many opportunities for competition through Tennis at St Dominic’s. The following are additions to the school calendar.

Road to Wimbledon Singles Tournament (Year 7-9)

Save the Children Girls Doubles Tournament (Year 6-8)

Save the Children Ladies Doubles Tournament (Year 9-12, parents, teachers)

Staffordshire League (Year 8)

Staffordshire League (Year 10)

Visits.

Summer 2008 saw the second trip to the DFS Edgbaston (Birmingham) WTA Tennis Tournament, where the pupils were invited for a session of coaching on court and to watch some of the worlds top women’s tennis players. We hope to run this trip every year through Warwickshire LTA.

As members of the British Schools Tennis Association, we will be entered into a ballot for Wimbledon tickets each year. Unfortunately we were not drawn winning tickets in 2008 but we are hopeful for next year.

ROUNDERS

Rounders is the most popular activity in the summer for all the pupils at St Dominic’s in both lessons and extra-curricular activities.

Practices.

Pupils have the opportunity to practice their rounders skills twice a week during lunch time (Year 7 & 8 together and Year 9-12 together), and three times a week during extended day. All pupils play together across the year groups, making it the most social of the sports clubs, but at the same time very competitive.

Competition.

Again, like the netball, we take advantage of our position in Staffordshire between Stafford and Wolverhampton. Fixtures take place after school on weekdays and Saturdays, both home and away.

ATHLETICS

Practices.

Pupils have the opportunity to practice their preferred individual events twice a week during lunch times in preparation for the regular Staffordshire competitions.

Competition.

Pupils can choose to take part in the Staffordshire competitions held regularly over the summer term at Rowley Park, against many other schools.

CROSS COUNTRY

Practices.

Those pupils who want to improve their fitness or are looking to compete in Cross Country competitions can choose to attend jogging club twice a week on Monday’s and Tuesday’s throughout the year.

Competition.

Development planned academic year 2008-2009:

Pupils will be able to enter both Staffordshire and ISA competitions as individuals and as a member of the school team.
