Sixth Form Blog

Hello! I'm Alex and I'm a fully fledged Sixth Former here at St Dominic's. I'm a
member of 12 Mason and began Sixth Form last September. There are 14 of us in Lower Sixth and so far we have been labelled as the 'studious' year group - let's hope that reputation continues! We are also addressed as 'you messy lot!' by Mrs Pearson, the Head of Sixth Form - let's just say we keep her on her toes!

Most of us found the jump from GCSE to A level a real awakening in terms of
independence. We were embarking on the path to adulthood and for most of us that meant monitoring our work load, taking on new responsibilities and doing the washing up - the horror! I have found that Sixth Form life is one of freedom; of course you have your studies but your time otherwise is spent how you wish.

For A level I am studying English Literature, Psychology, Philosophy and Ethics and Law. I find Philosophy and Ethics deeply fascinating as we challenge the concepts of God, human purpose and the origins of the world. Law was my wild card! But a rewarding investment as I find the subject particularly interesting because of its relevancy, the controversy and the very fact we deal with real life.

Amongst many opportunities presented to us in Sixth Form is the 'Young Enterprise' scheme, which involves running our own business by designing, manufacturing and selling a product. The majority of Year 12 are participating in Young Enterprise and have found the experience entirely worthwhile and unifying, where our individual skills and talents have combined to form a strong team. Kirsty, our Managing Director, has proved to be a competent, business-minded entrepreneur who leads the company with admirable maturity. Bethan and Sophie, the mathematicians, have managed the finance of the business and designed spreadsheets that I don't even attempt to comprehend! Whilst the rest of us, under the guidance of Business Advisors from the company Areva, are determined to prove that we can take on the boys any day!

All Sixth Formers are Prefects and also Mentors for students in the younger years, many are members of the Senior Choir who are competing at Dudley Festival later this month. Other activities include Sixth Form Sport Club, chairing several committees, international trips, house performances
and rehearsals for the summer production of Annie. I've been lucky enough to land the role of Daddy Warbucks- this seems to greatly amuse my family who have insisted on front row seats!

Here in the Sixth Form, we continue to form relationships, develop in character and just enjoy ourselves - as they say these are the best days of your life!
