SCHOOL NAME CHANGE FROM SEPTEMBER 1st 2010
St Dominic’s School in Brewood today announced that from September 1st 2010 it will be known as St Dominic’s High School for Girls.
The school has also renamed its infants and junior departments. The former Foundation and Key Stage 1 department will be known as the Pre-Preparatory department and the Junior Key Stage 2 department will be known as the Preparatory department. The present Preparatory class will be known as ‘Transition’.
The name change reflects the changes in the modern, Independent education system. Over the last 10 years St Dominic’s has achieved an outstanding academic track record being placed top of the league tables for GCSE results for nearly a decade. This academic record is worthy of any selective High school and as the Senior department has a selection procedure for all Year 7 students it is felt that the name should reflect this.
St Dominic’s School has a rich and varied history. Since opening as ‘The Dominican Convent School, Brewood’ on 20th September 1920 with just six pupils, our school has seen many changes through the years, surviving a World War and various recessions.
The Senior department building was originally donated to the Catholic Church after it was bought, in a state of disrepair, by local business man Louis Connolly. The Parish Priest at the time, Father O’Toole, had great plans for ‘Bargate’ and it is him, his visionary plans and forward thinking, that we have to thank for our current St Dominic’s School.
Over the years the school has grown and developed by moving with the times and delivering an outstanding education to all its pupils. Once a boarding school, its initial aim was to produce good wives in a Catholic surrounding, with less emphasis set on academic achievement or examinations. The school was for young ladies who were expected to grace family and social occasions with a natural ease and dignity.
How times have changed! And so has the school.
Today, as well as developing the whole person, the school places great importance on academic success and the career prospects for each and every girl. We are very proud of all the achievements of all the pupils who have attended the school, culminating in us gaining the top spot in the league tables for the majority of the last ten years.
This academic record is worthy of any selective High school. We are now a selective Senior department with all Year 7 pupils sitting a rigorous entrance exam.
The school has a long history and a heritage of 90 years to be proud of. We have a reputation for offering the highest standards of education and this can only be done by being forward thinking and offering an education that suits each child. Changing the school name to St Dominic’s High School for Girls reflects our modern day approach to the complete education of young people, preparing them for the rest of their lives.
We hope that you will join us in celebrating the success of our School and its future by embracing the new name for a new generation of pupils.
