Sixth Form Building Wins Design Award

St Dominc’s Sixth Form and Performing Arts Centre in Brewood has won the top prize in the South Staffordshire Design Awards competition for 2009.

The competition aims to promote the achievement of excellence in design and construction of buildings and spaces in the South Staffordshire area, with imaginative use of public art and increasing incorporation of sustainability.

The Sixth Form and Performing Arts Centre at St Dominic’s beat over 33 high profile architectural designs from across Staffordshire to win. The judges were highly impressed with the way that architects, Holloway Foo, had planned the superb features of its contemporary design within a historic school building setting.

The Awards were open to anyone involved in a building, public realm or refurbishment project anywhere within the district of including Cannock Chase, Lichfield, Stafford, South Staffs or Tamworth. Of the submitted designs, 12 were shortlisted, 5 won highly commended.

Mrs Sandra White, Headteacher commented “We wanted to open a Sixth form for our senior girls but had no home for one, and we wanted to provide the whole school with a dedicated performing arts centre. Holloway Foo had the unenviable task of interpreting our brief and we have been given a wonderful space for both pupils and teachers. The centre has become a flagship for the school and has helped us to reinforce our position as the leading girls’ school in Staffordshire after our first cohort of girls to take ‘A’ levels in the summer gained a 98.4% pass rate.”
