20 Nov 07 - Blists Hill Victorian Town

Years 1 and 2 visited Blists Hill Victorian Town on 20th November 2007.  The children dressed up in Victorian costumes and sampled school life as it would have been over one hundred years ago.

14 Nov 07 - Yr 11 & 12 Women's Enterprise Day - mini conference.

Year 11 and 12 Business Studies students attended a Mini Conference:  'Women's Enterprise Day' at Patshull Park Hotel in Shropshire on 14th November 2007.

Molly Bridges (Yr 11) has written a summary of this event...

The most interesting thing I learnt, after talking to some successful business women, is that the majority had left school not wanting to go into business.  I spoke to a previous linguist and accountant who both left their aforementioned jobs to become business women and both became successful.

It was also interesting when discussing ‘A’ level options that Business Studies was a rare choice.  One woman remarked that economics appeared more academic and many did not take any business orientated ‘A’ levels at all.  Making choices that provide as much scope as possible is important.  Also, gaining work experience in a variety of environments (even if it is only making coffee or photocopying) is important to get a feel for the setting and looks attractive on a CV.

30 Oct 07 - Yr 7 - trip to new Walsall Art Gallery.

In October 2007 Year 7 visited the new Art Gallery in Walsall, to widen their studies in Art and R.E.

They looked at aspects of the depiction of Christ in Art, which helped them to understand His reality and then viewed an exhibition by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelas comprising unusual 3D constructions in a variety of media, including a huge soft textile sculpture related to women’s identity.

The Gallery’s Education Officer showed the girls how to make their own individual textile “creatures” by using old tights, wools, felt, ribbon, feathers and elastic bands!

13 Oct 07 - KS3 & 4 - Fiction Writing Workshop, Birmingham.

On Saturday 13th October 2007, some of the girls from Year 10 and Year 11 attended a Fiction Writing Workshop at The Studio in Birmingham.  The session was led by the writer Mil Millington, a novelist and columnist for The Guardian newspaper.

The workshop provided the girls with a fantastic opportunity to explore different approaches to fiction writing in order to support them with their Creative Writing GCSE coursework and they all found it very useful.

12 Oct 07 - Yr 5 - Egyptian trip to Birmingham Museum.

On Friday 12th October 2007, Year 5 went to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to complete an Egyptian trail and workshop.

They started off by preparing a ‘body’ for mummification, putting the organs of the body into canopic jars. Then they wrapped the corpse in bandages.

As part of the workshop Year 5 examined Egyptian artefacts and wrote their names in hieroglyphics on papyrus.

As part of the Egyptian trail the children looked at statuettes, jewellery, a death mask, canopic jars, everyday objects and an original coffin.

2 Oct 07 - KS5 - English Enrichment Trip "Othello"

On Tuesday 2nd October 2007 a group of Year 12 English students travelled to Birmingham to see a production of Shakespeare’s Othello at the Old Rep.

The production was enjoyed by everyone and really brought Shakespeare to life.  Studying the play combined with the opportunity to view this excellent production at the Old Rep has brought the students' understanding of Othello to a new level.  The students were particularly impressed by the character of Iago, who was a powerful character and portrayed very well on stage.

20 Sept 07 - Yr 10 & 11 - "Blood Brothers" trip.

Year 10 and 11 students went to the Palace Theatre, Manchester, to see "Blood Brothers" on 20th September 2007.

Caitlin Wilson, Year 11, has written a short summary of their visit:

As part of our GCSE course we have been studying BLOOD BROTHERS to perform in our final showcase.

We went to the Palace Theatre, Manchester, to see the show on Thursday 20th September 2007.

As most professional shows usually are, it was fantastic; with Anthony Costa from ex-band BLUE playing Mickey.  The acting standard was spectacularly high and we had a really good time – though we sobbed all the way home because it was so sad and the portrayal was so powerful.

It was such a great experience.  As a class we find these trips excellent and it really helps us with our own practice work.  Therefore, I conclude that BLOOD BROTHERS at the Palace Theatre is well worth seeing and guarantees that even the most emotionally sturdy of people will be sobbing by the middle of the second half.

13 Sept 07 - Yr 5  - Wolverhampton Art Gallery

On 13th September 2007 Year 5 visited Wolverhampton Art Gallery as part of some Art/DT work on figures and sculptures.

They were shown around by an Art Interpreter, who pointed out potential ideas for their own figurines to be carved out of breeze blocks. The children sketched ideas for hands, hair and eyes. They were able to see the sensing sculpture, Pop Art, Georgian and ‘About Art’ exhibits.

12th Sept 07 - Yrs 3 & 5 visit Brewood

Year 3 and 5 visited Brewood as part of the Frank Dearden competition run by Brewood Civic Society. The title of the competition was ‘Changing Brewood’.

Year 3 were looking at the different buildings in the village.  In History they researched the past of these buildings and made 3D models to show the comparison.

Year 5 gathered inspiration for a piece of creative writing highlighting the changes in seasons between summer and autumn in Brewood.

8th-10th Sept 07 - Duke of Edinburgh Bronze & Silver Training.

The award this year, included Silvers for the first time. The practice
expedition took place in May at Beaudesert campsite, Cannock Wood. The assessed weekend was booked for July in the White Peak, however this was cancelled due to extremely bad weather and many flood warnings in the area. The assessed weekend was re-scheduled to September, when Miss Morris was also able to attend. The groups camped at Wetton and Beresford Campsite in the Peak District.

All groups had to complete a number of tasks, from camp craft, orienteering, planning route cards, cooking and assembling tents. The Silver trainees walked 16km and the Bronze trainees 12km a day.

The Bronze Team consisted of Ikarumas, Pink Ladies and Oasis Tag and the Silver Team were Farmhouse Cheddar, Hardcore Hiking Division and Peak Princesses.
